Happy Wednesday, Fintech Listeners!

Please enjoy some key takeaways from this week’s podcast, along with some additional audio recommendations.

If you need me, I’ll be relaxing by the pool.

(Editor’s Note — Relaxing by the pool isn’t all that relaxing when you are watching three toddlers, but we are still having lots of fun on vacation this week!)

3 BIG IDEAS FROM THE PODCAST

Happy Wednesday, Fintech Takers!

You know the drill: this is not fintech investment advice.

In this episode of (you guessed it) Not Fintech Investment Advice, Simon and I dig into a few fintechs tackling the tough stuff: grief, regulation, and brand erosion. The problems nobody wants to solve… but someone has to.

We get into:

  • The lived policy vs. the written policy
  • How to market a product you hope no one needs
  • Whether brands can survive agentic commerce
  • Why the best time to invest in compliance is when it feels totally optional

Tune in for the full conversation here

And read below for my three big ideas...

#1: When Admin Is the PainCopy anchor linkCopied

“Admin plus pain.” That’s how Simon described the emotional landmine of settling a loved one’s estate; something you hopefully do once or twice in your life with no room to mess it up.

That’s the wedge for Alix, a company built apparently on ~900 hours of death-related paperwork. They help families cancel subscriptions, settle debts, wrangle death certificates, and transfer deeds (and they do it with a blend of humans and AI that feels more “concierge at the worst moment of your life” than robo-advisor).

There’s a set of things you only ever do once or twice in your life … and probably those things are also very difficult and filled with administrative work and filled with choices you don't realize you're making.

You’re not selling a product people want; you’re solving for the moment when grief and bureaucracy crash into each other. And if you do that well?

You don’t just create a product. You become the default option.

#2: Lived Policy > Written PolicyCopy anchor linkCopied

Fintech has excelled at translating rules into code, but it’s still in its adolescence when it comes to nudging people toward something harder and arguably more important: helping them navigate the gray areas.

Compliance isn’t just about knowing what the policy says. It’s about how the most trusted person on your team flexes it (where they show discretion, when they escalate, how they make tradeoffs that reduce risk and preserve relationships).

Those are flexes that happen beyond the handbook; it's a lived policy.

And fintech hasn’t necessarily figured out how to capture it before those people quit, get poached, or burn out.

The startup Narrative is trying to solve that (and not by replacing compliance officers, but by watching them closely enough to scale their instincts).

It utilizes LLMs to assist banks in reviewing consumer complaints, crafting responses, and identifying systemic issues (while learning from patterns of human behavior).

In other words, not the policy manual, but the exceptions to it.

In an era when the CFPB is getting defanged, the smart move isn’t to de-prioritize consumer protection. It’s to invest in it before the pendulum swings back harder and more fragmented.

Seasoned financial services companies recognize that complaints serve as an early warning system for compliance issues. And they also know that in four years, it won’t be people reading your logs … it’ll be LLMs reading theirs.

#3: When the Bot Becomes the BrandCopy anchor linkCopied

The homepage is dead. SEO is fading.

The next wave of customer discovery is going to happen inside AI-powered chatbots … and we aren’t prepared for what that means.

When an LLM becomes the interface, it doesn’t just link to your brand. It represents your brand. Which means it might compress your value prop into whatever it thinks matters (price, speed, availability, and so on).

And that’s a disaster if your differentiation lives in things like reputation, trust, or brand story.

Fintech has spent a decade helping companies abstract away the backend. However, the front end is now being abstracted as well — and the risk is that brands become entirely interchangeable.

Ogment AI is one startup trying to get ahead of this moment.

They’re using Model Context Protocol (MCP) to let merchants pipe product data directly into ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, among others — making them “shoppable” in AI-native contexts. (Think: Shopify, but for agent commerce).

That said, the big questions of the moment remain just that: questions.

If the LLM becomes your new sales rep, who trains it to tell your story?

How well can the LLM represent your brand to the consumers it’s interacting with?

If the answer is “not well,” your differentiation disappears, without your getting a single chance to object.

🎬 DIRECTOR'S COMMENTARY

Simon and I spent a few minutes at the beginning of this podcast editorializing on JPMorgan Chase and open banking, which I’m glad we did.

I don’t usually pick Simon’s brain on current fintech events on the podcast, but perhaps this should become a standard segment in NFIA? Fintech story of the week?

Let me know what you think!

WHAT I'M LISTENING TO

#1: Compliance Officers in the Age of AI: Creating Second Line 2.0 (Model Citizens) 🎧Copy anchor linkCopied

Episode #3 in my special miniseries with FairPlay is now available!

This one is all about compliance, and it was a much more interesting and wide-ranging conversation than I had expected (which is saying a lot, considering I had very high expectations going in!)

The last three episodes in the series drop next week, so be sure to get caught up now so you’re ready!

#2: The Fintech OG Series: Charles Birnbaum and Cynthia Loh (This Week in Fintech) 🎧Copy anchor linkCopied

I actually haven’t listened to this one yet, but I’ll bet it’s good. When you have a great interviewer and great guests, the rest takes care of itself.

And that is the case here.

WHERE I'LL BE

September. My god in heaven. Tell my family I love them.

(If you’ll be at any of these shows, hit me up!)

✈️ Symposium on Agentic AI & Consumer Payments | 9/8 - 9/9 | Washington D.C.Copy anchor linkCopied

Put on by my friends at the Consumer Bankers Association. I look forward to learning more about a topic that fascinates me.

✈️ FinovateFall | 9/8 - 9/10 | New York CityCopy anchor linkCopied

I’ll be giving a 7-minute presentation on a trend in financial services that banks and fintech companies should be thinking about. I’ve done this specific session before, and it’s more difficult than it sounds. Looking forward to the challenge!

✈️ Cash Flow Underwriting Summit | 9/10 | New York CityCopy anchor linkCopied

I’ll be doing A LOT at this event, which is fortunate as I am OBSESSED with cash flow underwriting, as you have probably noticed!

✈️ Money Experience Summit | 9/15 - 9/17 | Salt Lake CityCopy anchor linkCopied

One of my favorites. I never miss it. My panel this year should be a lot of fun!

✈️ Salt Flats Summit | 9/17 - 9/18 | Salt Lake CityCopy anchor linkCopied

Truly one of the most unique events I’ve ever attended. Looking forward to year 2!

✈️ AI-Native Banking & Fintech Conference | 9/30 | Salt Lake CityCopy anchor linkCopied

Year 2 for this one as well. The first one was a lot of fun (plus, I’m digging all these conferences in my backyard … Silicon Slopes for the win!)

⛰️ The Fintech Builders Summit | Nov 12 - 13 | Bozeman, MTCopy anchor linkCopied

Big conferences are great for collecting swag (not so much for solving real problems). The Fintech Builders Summit is a small (~60), exclusive gathering built around a handful of well-researched deep dives on the toughest challenges in fintech, led by some of the most thoughtful and curious minds out there.
